About Us

The E3 Foundation is a think-tank based in Cambridge, England. We develop policy solutions to the interconnected economic, energy and environmental problems that threaten future global prosperity. We are a not-for-profit organisation with an inclusive structure, drawing on an extensive network of academic and other experts in all our project work. Our products are intensively reviewed and available to everyone. We are pragmatic and aim to provide realistic solutions that will be effective in the world as it is, not how we would like it to be. Our proposals therefore take account of existing political and market structures and do not assume that these constraints can simply be willed away. On the other hand, it is clear to us that tough choices are going to have to be made if we are to avert a dismal future. We believe that radical and systemic solutions are both necessary and possible, as long as they are realistic evolutions of existing technological, economic, political and social systems and do not favour the interests of some groups over others. The problems we analyse, such as climate change, are global, and we therefore work towards a global framework of incentives and systems to enable the rapid uptake of the best available policy solutions appropriate to the widely different circumstances that exist at the national and local level. Through our approach, we provide coherent strategies for action at the global, national and local levels that can be implemented in time to avert the most serious threats to global prosperity. |
On the Horizon...
![]() E3 has now completed the third of a series of workshops on Rapid Decarbonisation. The first (in Cambridge) established the intent of the Workshop Series. The second (in Oxford)characterised uncertainty and epistemic status of climate science for risk-based assessments of climate change policy and trajectories of decarbonisation. The third (in London) focused on the ethical, political, legal and other social aspects of rapid decarbonisation strategies. A fourth workshop on implementation of such strategies is to be held in Cambridge or London in early 2012. Contact Us for more information.
We have also begun two new projects:
Energy Atlas: a world-wide group of researchers is developing an atlas of energy supplies and their relationship to renewable energy technologies, to be published in 2012.
Carbon Prices: E3 are joining with the Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research and YouGov-Cambridge to conduct a global poll to identify how high carbon prices would need to be to drive investment decisions in the private sector.
